IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEM

Bridging the Gap for Refugee and Immigrant Children.

Newly arrived refugee and immigrant children in the UK face significant barriers to integration, particularly in accessing English as an Additional Language (EAL) support and essential social resources. With physical support services often limited by location and availability, these young people need a mobile-friendly solution that provides on-the-go access to education and community connections.

Led by Dr. Ashwiny O Kistnareddy of the University of Oxford, AdaptWell was designed to address these challenges by offering tailored language learning tools, well-being support, and social integration resources. The goal was to create a user-friendly, multilingual digital platform that provides immediate, relevant educational content to help young refugees navigate their new environment.

AdaptWell needed an intuitive, scalable, and easily accessible app that could support multiple languages, customised learning journeys, and location-based resources, ensuring its impact was both immediate and long-term.

CRAFTING THE SOLUTION

A Multilingual, Adaptive Learning Platform.

To meet AdaptWell’s goals, we developed a cross-platform mobile app using Flutter, ensuring consistent performance and a smooth user experience across both iOS and Android devices. Designed with accessibility, usability, and inclusivity at its core, the platform supports users from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds while delivering high-impact educational support. It goes beyond traditional learning tools by combining tailored content delivery with community integration and real-time feedback. The app not only addresses immediate educational needs but also contributes to long-term resource development through anonymous data collection, which supports ongoing research and platform improvement. Key features include multilingual support in ten languages including Cantonese, Ukrainian, and Arabic helping users engage with the platform in their preferred language. An interactive onboarding assessment evaluates each user’s English proficiency and personal context, enabling the app to deliver customised educational content that is both skill-level appropriate and sensitive to regional needs. To strengthen community connection, the app integrates location-based directories that link users to essential local services such as food banks and support centres. A built-in feedback system empowers users to share their experiences, ensuring the platform evolves in response to real-world needs and helping AdaptWell continuously refine and expand its impact.
