A Secure and Scalable Development Platform for Northumbria University.

Northumbria University is known for its academic excellence and industry partnerships, working with major organisations like Nike, IBM, Nissan, and the BBC. Despite its strong reputation, the university lacked a reliable platform for students to develop and test their coding skills.

The key challenges were:

• Lack of a secure, structured environment for students to work with PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and MySQL.
• No existing integration with the university’s student database, requiring a new system with automated access control.
• A need for enhanced security, ensuring students could work in individual, isolated containers.
• Full administrative control for university staff, allowing them to enable or disable access as needed.
  

Northumbria needed a robust, scalable, and user-friendly server solution that would support ongoing learning and development for students across multiple disciplines.

We designed and deployed a custom Linux-based server platform for Northumbria University, providing students with secure, isolated environments to develop and test real-world coding, database, and server management projects. Known as NU MySpace, the platform has been a vital part of the university’s digital infrastructure for over 13 years, supporting thousands of students with reliable, hands-on learning experiences that mirror professional development environments.

Key features include unlimited jailed user environments for individual security, seamless integration with the university’s student database for automated account provisioning, and full access to SFTP, SSH, and MySQL. A dedicated webserver enables students to host HTML content, while 24/7 monitoring and alert systems maintain uptime and security. An administrator control panel gives university staff the tools to manage access with ease.
